Opticon SE-290A — 2.9″ Electronic Shelf Labels for Narrow Rails and Dense Facings

Not every shelf has room for a full-size label. Pharmacy shelving, convenience gondolas, hardware bins and high-SKU-density fixtures need something that fits the rail it’s given. At 103.5 x 43.2 mm the SE-290A is the smallest display in the SE-Range, built for the facings where larger labels overhang or crowd out product.

The densest deployment in the range

One base station carries up to 1,500 SE-290A displays — more than the 4.2″ SE-420 at 1,000 and the 5.83″ SE-583RY at 800. On a high-SKU fixture where every facing takes a label, that capacity difference is the difference between one base station per floor and two. Range is a typical 25 metres indoors or 100 metres open field.

Small, but fully graphical

296 x 128 pixels at 112 dpi is enough for the information a shelf edge actually needs: product name, price, unit or per-kilogram pricing, origin, and a scannable 1D or 2D barcode. Content is 100% flexible with fully customisable templates, so the label carries your layout rather than a vendor default. The high-contrast e-paper surface holds legibility at wide viewing angles — relevant on bottom shelves and above eye line.

Central pricing, immediate on the shelf

Push a change from the Opticon ESL Web Server Software and it reaches the shelf within seconds — one SKU, one fixture, or the whole estate. Promotions start and end on schedule, markdowns land when authorised, and the gap where the shelf and the till disagree closes. No printing, no ticket runs, no staff walking the floor before opening.

A locator LED and a button on the shelf edge

Every label carries an RGB LED with adjustable brightness and duty cycle — useful for guiding click-and-collect pickers to a facing, flagging a recall, or lighting every position in a planogram reset. Uniquely in the SE-Range, the SE-290A also has a physical button. Through the free SDK it can change the displayed page, control the LED, or send an event to a back-end system, with distinct short, long and double press actions. In a retail setting that opens up shelf-edge stock checks, price verification and staff-initiated replenishment requests without a handheld.

Choosing between SE-290A and SE-290ARY

For most shopfloor retail the SE-290ARY is the right pick — red is how a markdown reads as a markdown, and a heated store sits comfortably inside 0–40 °C. Choose the monochrome SE-290A where fixtures run cold or the stockroom is unheated. Note that the locator LED is RGB on both models, so the monochrome version can still signal by light even without red on the display.
